1)    INTRODUCTION

Water pollution is a major global problem. It requires ongoing evaluation and revision of water resource policy at all levels (international down to individual aquifers and wells). It has been suggested that water pollution is the leading worldwide cause of death and diseases.Water pollution accounted for the deaths of 1.9 million people in 2018.

2)    DEFINITION

➽    Water Pollution :-

Water Pollution is defined as the presence in groundwater of toxic chemicals and biological agents that exceed what is naturally found in the water and may pose a threat to human health and the environment. Additionally, Water Pollution may consist of chemicals introduced into the water bodies as a result of various human activities. Any amount of those chemicals pollutes the water, regardless of the harm they may pose to human health and the environment.

The human being is the main responsible for water pollution

Humans are the main cause of water pollution, which is triggered in many ways: by the dumping of industrial waste; due to temperature rise, that cause the alteration of water by reducing the oxygen in its composition; Or due to deforestation, which causes sediments and bacteria to appear under the soil and therefore contaminate groundwater. In the same way, the pesticides used in agricultural fields filter through underground channels and reach the consumption networks; And also as a result of accidental spillage of oil.

What are the effects of water pollution?

What are the main consequences of water                       pollution?

Firstly, the disappearance of biodiversity and aquatic ecosystems. Also, humans are harmed by the alteration in the food chain and by contracting illnesses when drinking or using contaminated water. As you can see, water pollution has a great impact in the environment.

For all this, we must ensure water availability, its sustainable management and sanitation for all, as reflected in the sixth of the Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the United Nations in the 2030 Agenda.

3) Effects of Pollution of Water

Diseases: In humans, drinking or consuming polluted water in any way has many disastrous effects on our health. It causes typhoid, cholera, hepatitis and various other diseases.

Destruction of Ecosystems: Ecosystems are extremely dynamic and respond to even small changes in the environment. Water pollution can cause an entire ecosystem to collapse if left unchecked.

Eutrophication: Chemicals in a water body, encourage the growth of algae. These algae form a layer on top of the pond or lake. Bacteria feed on this algae and this decreases the amount of oxygen in the water body, severely affecting the aquatic life there.

Effects the food chain: Disruption in food chains happens when toxins and pollutants in the water are consumed by aquatic animals (fish, shellfish etc) which are then consumed by humans.

4) CAUSES OF WATER POLLUTION

     Rapid Urban Development

       Improper Sewage Disposal

➽     Use of Toxic Chemicals for the Plants

➽    Dumping of Chemical Wastes by Big Factories

   ➽    Discharge of Radioactive Wastes

 5) Prevention

The best way to prevent large-scale water pollution is to try and reduce its harmful effects. There are various small changes we can make to protect ourselves from a scary future where water is scarce.

Save Water: Conserving water is our first aim. Water wastage is a major problem globally and we are only now waking up to the issue. Simply small changes you can make domestically will make a huge difference.

Better treatment of sewage: So treating waste products before disposing of it in a water body helps reduce water pollution on a large scale. Agriculture or other industries can reuse this wastewater by reducing its toxic contents.

Use environmentally friendly products: By using soluble products that do not go on to become pollutants, we can reduce the amount of water pollution caused by a household.

6) How Does Water Pollution Affect Us?

Water pollution may cause a large variety of diseases and poses a serious problem for human health. This is mainly because we may get exposed to polluted water in various ways, including, but not necessarily limited to:

➽   Drinking polluted water

➽  Bathing or showering in polluted water

Swimming in polluted water

Breathing the vapors of a polluted water while sitting next to a polluted                 water source

Consuming polluted food (meat and/or vegetables) affected by polluted                 water

Consuming meat from animals fed with polluted water of food affected by polluted water (e.g. vegetables irrigated with polluted water or grown in an area with polluted groundwater)

7) Water Conservation

Raise awareness about the need to conserve water supplies with a short and memorable saving water slogan.

  • No Water, No Life
  • Our Bodies Need Clean Bodies of Water
  • We're All Equal in Our Need for Water
  • Without Water, Everything Withers
  • When You Save Water, It Saves You Back

8) Remedies for Water Pollution

Pollution of pond water, source of drinking water and the water used by human being in their day to day life must be prevented. But it is too tough to control reverine water pollution. The following remedial measures may be taken to improve the environment:

Sewage water must not be directly poured into any water body. Before                   pouring sewage water must be treated with lime or by any other means.

➽ In pond or in any other water body urination or defections must be not                 being  done. Polluted waters should not be consumed.

Awareness campaigns for drinking boiled water should be encouraged.

Stagnant water should be removed to prevent breeding of mosquito. When         water borne diseases appear it must be detected and vaccination should be           done accordingly.

Factory owners should take appropriate measures to stop the discharge of           waste into lake, rivers and oceans.

General awareness to the common people about health should be increased         by means of seminar, symposiums etc.

Care must be given specially to children and the diseased person, separately.

9) Conclusion

In sum, water pollution has been one of the major issues of countries around the world. Water is essential in our lives, and we cannot just ignore the fact that the world’s source of clean water is depleting.
The government spends billions to rehabilitate bodies of water and save their people from disasters.

Water pollution is caused by all citizens, whether those are small-scale unto huge oil spills and waste disposals by big factories. Everything that we do will ultimately cause the destruction of the bodies of water, from disposing plastics in the sea, flushing of drugs in the toilet, or using pesticides for the plants in our garden.
However, we still have time to prove our worth in this planet and save the mother earth from destruction. We must change our lifestyle and live simple. Go green and save the water.
